Let God Do Most of the Work

“I did nothing.  The Word did it all.  I simply taught, preached, and wrote God’s Word, otherwise I did nothing.  And while I slept, or drank Wittenberg beer with my friends Philipp and Amsdorf, the Word weakened all who opposed me” – Martin Luther on the Protestant Reformation

The Church has a future because Jesus Christ has a future.  Martin Luther embraced an important conviction that we fail to embrace today:  Jesus is the One building the church, not us.  And Jesus is at work even when we are not.

It wasn’t that Luther slept more than he should, or sat around drinking beer with his buddies all the time.  Truth is, he worked far too much – like most of us do today – and it took a toll on him.  However, he came to realize that God’s Word worked more effectively than he ever could, so he acknowledged that fact.

Let’s work for sure.  Let’s preach.  Let’s provide pastoral care.  Let’s speak the gospel to our neighbors.  Let us care one for another.  But in the end, the Church belongs to the Lord and He's building it up, so it’s okay take some time off to sleep and have a merry heart.

And oh yea, let’s also be reminded that Someone is minding the store when we aren’t “saving the world.”
